Take your time to watch this!

This video was recorded in one of the Felda in Johor. People there are not aware on the danger of sugar and they consume too much of it until it became a BIG problem. Most of the people there are suffering from Diabetes. This video was recorded last year. When we saw what happened to the community there, we realized that it's time for us (Koperasi Diabetes) to educate the public and stop Diabetes for good!

It was a traumatizing and life changing experience once we reach to the Felda neighborhood. You can smell the rotten flesh of the Diabetic patients once you enter their houses. We know the video looks disgusting but sooner or later YOU might face this problem if you continue being ignorant on the danger of DIABETES! Together lets make a change and live a healthier life without sacrificing the satisfaction of food.

  10. Diabetes 101

    Thursday, 7 June 2012

    Who can get Diabetes?
    ANYONE at any age!

    What caused Diabetes?
When your sugar level in your blood, called glucose is too high. Your body need glucose to produce energy for your daily life routine. However, too much of glucose in your body is bad for you.

    Where does glucose come from?
Not only from sugar that you put in your coffee daily, but also from the food that you eat like rice, bread, your favourite 'roti canai' etc. Your blood carries glucose to your cells and hormone called insulin help glucose to produce energy for your body. If your body does not make enough insulin or does not work properly, glucose can't find it ways to the cells and stays in your blood, resulting to high blood glucose, or known as high blood sugar.

I heard there is two types of Diabetes, is it true?

    Yes.

    • Type 1 Diabetes - The body CANNOT produce its own insulin. This is normally a genetically inherit. They have to take insulin everyday. Less common.

    • Type 2 Diabetes - Caused because of your daily dietary. It can happens to anyone at any age, even in childhood. If left untreated, will lead to heart disease, stroke, amputation, kidney damage & blindness. VERY COMMON. 90% of Diabetic is type 2!

    And What is PRE-DIABETES?
Before developing into Diabetes, most people will develop pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes involves blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough to define as Diabetes yet.

    Symptoms:

    • Excessive thirst
    • Frequent urination
    • Sudden weight loss
    • Blurry vision
    • Wounds won't heal

Many does not even realized they are pre-diabetes until they go for medical checkup.

    HOWEVER..........

Apart from all that mumbo jumbo, good news! DIABETES can be prevented from happening. If you choose to manage your blood sugar level by staying healthy with your diet, take less sugar or better yet, no sugar at all and do more physical activity, that choices you make will definitely keep you at bay from Diabetes.

    Remember,

    You are who you eat.
TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A CHANGE.

  12.    On the 1st till the 4th of May 2012, Koperasi Diabetes managed to get a spot on Carnival Bank Negara. We offer Stevia based products and at the same time let people know that there are other alternative for the sweet tooth out there, such as Daily Right 3 in 1 Coffee Mix & Daily Right Stevia

     KN preparing the coffee

Youth Movement of Koperasi Diabetes were there to attract people to the booth and let people know about our campaign. We also gave out the Daily Right 3 in 1 Coffee Mix coffee samples & cookie samples to the booth attendees so that they'll know how stevia can still sweeten their favourite beverage, foods and even desserts without the fear of consuming high content of sugar. Most of them were shocked by how stevia can be so sweet and the cookies & coffee contains no sugar but only stevia. At the end of the event, we were glad to let people know about the magic of stevia and hope it was an eye opener to the visitors of Bank Negara's Carnival that week. :)

     Coffee anyone?

  14. Hey guys,

As I was browsing on the net today, I came across an article about Diabetic in Malaysia. The obesity epidemic has created a generation of children and teens who have type 2 diabetes, and a new study hints that the solution to this problem is not going to come easily. Because type 2 diabetes among children is a recent development, many treatment decisions have relied on what is known about adults with type 2 diabetes. In order to cure their sickness, diabetes drugs metformin and Avandia proved more effective than metformin alone or metformin plus lifestyle changes for keeping blood sugar at normal levels. Still, the combination failed to help most of the patients who took it.Below is a picture of metformin and avandia.

     Metformin
want to know more about metformin please go to this link http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a696005.html

    Avandia
want to know more about metformin please go to this link

This is an average follow-up of nearly four years after taking these medication:

  15. About half the patients who took metformin alone failed the treatment, meaning that they did not achieve adequate blood sugar control for a minimum of two years or ended up requiring insulin.
  16. 38% of patients who took metformin and Avandia failed treatment.
  17. 46% of patients in the metformin and lifestyle part of the study failed treatment. A family-based weight management program was found to add little benefit to treatment with metformin alone. While some children in the program lost weight, most did not.

  18. In an editorial published along with the study, Allen argues that efforts to teach children to make healthy lifestyle choices is influenced by the environment they live in.

"Fifty years ago, children did not avoid obesity by making healthy choices; they simply lived in an environment that provided fewer calories and included more physical activity for all," he writes. "Until a healthier 'eat less, move more' environment is created for today's children, lifestyle interventions like that in (this) study will fail."

After reading the article it makes me wonder, what will happen if stevia was introduced to us earlier? Will there be any type 2 diabetics in the world?? I dont know. But one thing that I' m sure of is that it would have make the world a better place for us to live in.

    Sugar?? Stevia?? U decide.

    Food for thought

  19.    For the past few months, Youth Movement of Koperasi Diabetes has initiated an effort to collect 1000 petitions from the public. These petition will be our evidence of letting the society know that there are others who care about changing Malaysians way of life and become healthier. We went all over Klang Valley to get signatures for the petition and went to various events so that people would notice us and our initiative.

One of the event that we went to was World Halal Research Summit & MIHAS on the 4th & 5th April at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Koperasi Diabetes managed to get one exhibition booth on the event day and the response we got from the public was pleasantly surprised. We got them to try some of the Stevia based product and also distribute flyers and explain about what we are championing on.

    Out exhibition booth
We managed to collect around 400+ signatures on the World Halal Research Summit & MIHAS event and most of the ones we approached were youth between 18-25 years old. Glad that most of them were very supportive towards the "Say No To Diabetes" campaign. After few gruelling weeks, we, the Youth Movement of Koperasi Diabetes managed to collect 1000 petitions from the public and with that we can start our first step towards our goal, TO MAKE A CHANGE!

  • Yesterday, on 3rd June 2012, TUDM Subang held an Air Show. We, the Youth Movement of Koperasi Diabetes KL went there to join the fun and at the same time to promote our "Say No To Diabetes" awareness campaign by giving out flyers to the visitors. We got to meet some of the jet fighters of TUDM as well and they were very supportive towards our campaign. The crowd were very good this time around and  interested with our explanation about the awareness.

The itinerary of the events includes air shows, performances by local celebrities like Adibah Noor, Harith Iskandar and Ana Rafali. Apart from that, there were also booth exhibitions (air craft, fighter jets, helicopters etc.) &  bazaars. Come to our attention yesterday, there was this stall selling "Angry Bird" rice. How funny is that? :D Overall, yesterday was a fun filled day for us and hope we could attend it again next year! :)

Bazaars, we forgot to capture the "Angry Bird" rice stall. :D
